How a national number is structured
- YY.MM.DD: date of birth (month or day can be 00 if unknown).
- SSS: daily serial number; odd for men, even for women.
- CC: check digits (97 minus the remainder of the first 9 digits divided by 97).
How the check works
Using the published example 85.07.30-033.28:
Take the first 9 digits as one number: 850730033. Then 97 − (850730033 mod 97) = 97 − 69 = 28. For people born in 2000 or later, put a 2 in front first (2850730033) before calculating.
A passing check only means the number is well-formed; it doesn't prove the number was issued to anyone.
Frequently asked questions
What is a BIS number?
A number for people who aren't in the national register, such as cross-border workers. The month has 20 or 40 added.
Why do people born after 2000 need a 2 in front?
To keep the check digits unique across centuries, a 2 is placed in front of the 9 digits before calculating them for births from 2000 onwards.
